![]() ![]() Unless there is a court order removing the parental responsibility of one of the parents (very unusual), or a court order giving only one of the parents a "residence" or "live with" order, which normally gives that parent the right to remove the child from the jurisdiction of England and Wales and therefore the right to authorise such removal for up to a month, you would need authorisation from both parents. Passports are excellent identification for each parent to take to the notary to prove they are who they say they are. You certainly don't need to take copies of the parents' passports with you although a copy of your granddaughter's birth certificate could be useful. ![]() Travelling as an unaccompanied minor is not a way around getting proper authorisation from the parents. ![]() The airline employee, immigration officer or doctor needs to know that the people who signed the authorisation actually are those people and the parents of the child. Notarised or not notarised letters are not alternatives. I really don't understand C2D4's post although Scotland is a different jurisdiction and I practise family law in England and Wales, not in Scotland. Has anyone travelled to the USA with a child who is not their own without a notarized letter of consent from both the child’s parents – what was your experience please? If we cannot get a notarised copy of that letter should we cancel our trip? I worry about everything and I am worried that we will be refused entry to the USA with our granddaughter, if we do not have a notarised copy of her parents’ consent letter. They may find it difficult to get a notary to notarise the letter. Our granddaughters’ parents are not together and we do not live near either of them. I am not sure we will be able to achieve this. I have recently discovered that this letter should be notarized by a notary. We have a letter of consent for our granddaughter to travel with us, signed by both her parents. We are all British citizens with British passports. We will be flying from London via a connection in Philadelphia to Orlando, so we will be entering the USA at Philadelphia. My partner and I are hoping to take our 13 year old granddaughter to Disneyland in Florida on 17th August for 14 days. ![]()
